What’s stopping you from a courageous life?

Have you ever wanted to do something that would light a fire inside you but found yourself making excuses for not doing it?

Maybe you think you’re too old or too young, need more experience, fear what others might think, or have an unwanted case of self-doubt.

The other day, I was out shopping for pressies when I stumbled upon some gorgeous coffee mugs with bright colours and inspiring words, including “wild,” “strong,” “courageous,” and “fierce.” Designed by a clever woman, Kasey Rainbow.

I loved them all, so to help me decide which one to buy I asked the lovely blonde sales assistant (in her late 50’s) which resonated most with her. She didn’t even hesitate before saying “courageous.”

Intrigued, I asked her why. She explained that she had always dreamed of going back to university to get her law degree so she could help people needing legal assistance. She gave me a few examples of how it would have come in handy over the last few years. And she had done legal studies back in her day.

As she spoke, I could hear the passion in her voice. But then she went on to list all the excuses holding her back – her age, what her family would think, what her friends would say, and the money and time required to pursue such a way-out dream.

I listened silently, and when she was finished, she paused and sighed. She admitted that what was truly holding her back was a lack of courage.

It wasn’t until we were both staring at the “courageous” mug that something inside her shifted. She realised that ‘she’ was the only thing stopping her from taking action.

At that moment, she committed to buying the mug when her shift ended and would go home to research her options to become a mature age law student.

We’re not getting any younger, and life is not slowing down. It’s easy to put off what we want as we wait for the right time or the perfect conditions, which as we know may never come.

As I witnessed with the sales assistant, sometimes it only takes a simple word on a mug to remind us of what we truly want and give us the courage to go after it.

What mug would it be for you?

I ended up buying all the mugs, and I’m keeping courageous for me.
